The Tanzanian government is planning to develop the harbor at Mbamba Bay, which is located in southwestern Tanzania on Lake Nyasa, due east of Malawi. This will greatly increase the indigent and tansient populations of Mbamba Bay and highlight the infrastructure and social challenges that the inhabitants will encounter.
In anticipation of this and the resultant increase in tourism, the St. Agnes African Sisters have built a hotel in Mbamba Bay. The St. Benadeta Hotel is named after Sr. Benadeta, who died in 1950, and was officially opened by the president of Tanzania in 2006.
The hope is that revenue from this hotel will enable the sisters to open a desperately needed dispensary and nursery school to serve the population of Mbamba Bay. This project has been identified as one of the top priorities for the St. Agnes community, and efforts are currently underway to identify and obtain funding to begin construction on the dispensary and nursery school.
